Setting Up OptimizedStoreFinder in 30 Minutes
A step-by-step guide to installing OptimizedStoreFinder on your Shopify store, adding your first locations, configuring SEO settings, and going live in under 30 minutes.
Matt
Getting a fully SEO-optimized store locator running on your Shopify store doesn’t require a developer or hours of configuration. This guide walks you through the entire setup process, from installation to your first indexed location page, in about 30 minutes.
Before You Start
You’ll need:
- A Shopify store (any plan)
- At least one physical store location with its address
- About 30 minutes of uninterrupted time
That’s it. No coding knowledge, no third-party accounts, no API keys.
Step 1: Install the App (2 minutes)
Head to the Shopify App Store and search for “OptimizedStoreFinder,” or use the direct link above.
Click Add app, then Install app on the permissions screen. Shopify will ask you to approve the permissions OptimizedStoreFinder needs, which include:
- Reading your store’s theme (to embed the locator widget)
- Managing navigation (to add a “Locations” link if you choose)
- Creating pages (for your dedicated location pages)
Once installed, you’ll land on the OptimizedStoreFinder dashboard inside your Shopify admin.
Step 2: Add Your First Location (5 minutes)
From the dashboard, click Add Location. You’ll see a form with the following fields:
Required information:
- Store name: The name customers will see (e.g., “Downtown Chicago” or “Michigan Ave Flagship”)
- Street address: Full street address
- City, State, ZIP: Standard address fields
- Country: Selected from a dropdown
Recommended information:
- Phone number: Displayed on the location page with click-to-call
- Email: Contact email for this specific location
- Business hours: Set hours for each day of the week, including marking days as closed
When you save the location, OptimizedStoreFinder automatically geocodes the address to get latitude and longitude coordinates. These coordinates power the map pin and proximity search features.
What happens behind the scenes: The app generates a dedicated page for this location at a URL like /locations/downtown-chicago. This page includes the store’s full address, hours, phone number, and a map. It also includes LocalBusiness JSON-LD structured data that tells Google exactly what this location is.
Step 3: Add More Locations (5-15 minutes)
Repeat the process for each of your store locations. If you have many locations, you have two options:
Manual entry: Best for stores with fewer than 10 locations. Each one takes about 2-3 minutes to fill in.
Bulk import: For larger networks, use the CSV import feature. Prepare a spreadsheet with columns for name, address, city, state, zip, country, phone, and hours. Upload the CSV file, map the columns, and import everything at once. This can handle hundreds of locations in a single upload.
The bulk import also geocodes all addresses automatically, so you don’t need to provide coordinates.
Step 4: Configure Your SEO Settings (5 minutes)
Navigate to Settings > SEO in the OptimizedStoreFinder dashboard. Here you’ll configure how your location pages appear in search results.
Meta Title Template
Set a template for your location page titles. The default is:
{store_name} - {city}, {state} | {brand_name}
This generates titles like “Downtown Chicago - Chicago, IL | Your Brand” which work well for local search queries.
Meta Description Template
Similarly, set a template for descriptions:
Visit {store_name} at {address}, {city}, {state}. Open {hours_summary}. Get directions, hours, and contact info.
These templates ensure every location page has unique, relevant meta tags without you having to write each one manually.
Structured Data Settings
By default, OptimizedStoreFinder generates LocalBusiness JSON-LD for every location. You can customize:
- Business type: Choose a more specific Schema.org type (e.g., RetailStore, ClothingStore, ShoeStore) that best describes your business
- Price range: Set the price range indicator (e.g., ”$$”)
- Payment methods: List accepted payment methods
These details help Google better understand and categorize your business in search results.
Step 5: Set Up the Locator Widget (3 minutes)
The locator widget is the interactive map and search interface that customers see on your site. Go to Settings > Widget to configure it.
Key settings:
- Search radius: Default distance for proximity search (e.g., 25 miles)
- Map style: Choose a clean, branded map appearance
- Results layout: List view, map view, or split view
- Colors: Match the widget’s accent colors to your brand
To add the widget to a page on your store, you have two options:
- App block (recommended): In the Shopify theme editor, add the OptimizedStoreFinder app block to any page. This is the simplest approach and requires no code.
- Embed code: Copy the embed snippet from the settings page and paste it into any Shopify page, blog post, or custom template.
Step 6: Publish and Verify (5 minutes)
Before going live, review your setup:
- Preview a location page: Click “View page” next to any location in your dashboard. Confirm the address, hours, and map look correct.
- Test the widget: Visit the page where you placed the locator widget. Search for a location and confirm it shows the correct results.
- Check structured data: Use Google’s Rich Results Test with a location page URL to verify the JSON-LD is valid.
Once everything looks good, make sure your location pages are set to Published (they are by default). The sitemap is generated automatically and submitted to Google.
Add a Navigation Link
Don’t bury your store locator. Add a “Locations” or “Find a Store” link to your main navigation so customers can easily find it. In Shopify:
- Go to Online Store > Navigation
- Edit your main menu
- Add a menu item pointing to
/pages/locations(or wherever your locator widget lives)
What Happens Next
After publishing, here’s the timeline for SEO results:
- Within 24 hours: Google discovers your new sitemap and begins crawling location pages
- 1-2 weeks: Location pages start appearing in Google’s index (you can check via
site:yourstore.com/locationsin Google) - 2-4 weeks: Location pages begin ranking for branded local queries (e.g., “your brand + city”)
- 1-3 months: Pages gain authority and start appearing for broader local queries
You can monitor indexing progress in Google Search Console by filtering for your /locations/ URL path.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Setup
Keep hours up to date. Nothing frustrates a customer more than driving to a store that’s actually closed. Update holiday hours in advance.
Use descriptive location names. “Store #47” means nothing to a customer or to Google. “Magnificent Mile” or “Downtown Portland” provides useful context.
Add all your locations. Even if you have 200 stores, add them all. Each one is a new page that can rank in local search for its area. More locations means more geographic coverage in search results.
Don’t duplicate your Google Business Profile. Your store locator and Google Business Profile serve different purposes. Keep both updated with consistent information (same name, address, phone number format).
